Recently, it seems that having the knowledge of Intercultural Communication is becoming a hot issue in this global environment, especially having the ability of Intercultural Communication. It is quite evident that different area owns its unique characteristics and strong points. How can we communicate with different people who have different culture background successfully? Thus, culture involved in communication. Different nation has different culture, so we can have all kinds of cultures. If it is culture that dictates the perception of difference in communication, then how will perceived differences affect interaction when people of diverse cultural backgrounds meet?

For me, when I meet other different culture, I feel confused and don’t understand. It happened between a foreigner and me.

Maria is a foreign student of my teacher. She is from Russia, beautiful and warm-hearted. Last time, We, Chinese students of professor An, had a meeting in Shanghai together with her. There was full of interesting things between us.

Take one for instance: it was very cold in Shanghai in December, and one night we had a meal in a restaurant. When I went to the restaurant, I began to sneeze. It was strange that as soon as I sneezed, Maria said “Baisui”(which means you can live for a long time). While others did nothing. The embarrassing discovery of it was that how many times I sneezed, and how many times she said “Baisui”. We were all surprised and asked her why. She told us it was her culture, when somebody sneezes, if you have given no response to him or her, it is considered impolite. On the contrary, we often overlook this behavior. According to Confucianism, we obey the view that Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil. For most of the time, we live in a very polite state. It’s sure to keep up with a beauty image of ourselves in public. Therefore, we keep silent when others have their private behavior, for example, sneeze, cough, clear throat, etc. So, out of courtesy, we often put a handkerchief over our mouth when we sneeze.

Another idea is that when somebody sneezes, we joke with him about if there’s someone missing him right now. In this case, we can easily create a relaxed atmosphere with those people who don’t care the sound and the person who sneezes loudly. More interestingly, though, “Maybe someone calls me names,” the person who sneezes always answers in this way. Both of them will laugh loudly in the end. It is also said that foreigners say “Bless you!” when someone sneezes. Of course, it sounds very gentle.

Referred to cultural diversity, it reminds me of Tulou in Fujin province. It is said that the Tulou cluster is a pearl in eastern civilization for its wide varieties, giant scale, fine structure and cultural enrichment. Nowadays, the regional development is becoming more and more important in this economic competition oriented era, especially government giving the priority to make full use of land in order to survive in the economic warfare. Newspapers have reported that officials in Fujian province, wanted to turn the Tulou into a “central business district” and invited a foreign design company to give it an entirely new look. When it comes to this issue, I am strongly against it. It failed to reflect regional characteristics or local cultural diversity. In a degree, although it is different from the modern buildings in a technology-based perspective, it is a precious tangile culture heritage without parallel. We should spare no effort to protect it.

In recent years we can enjoy the same films, fashions, brands, advertisements and TV channels. The evident difference between countries is disappearing. Some cultures in the rural area have been lost and some are in danger. There is no doubt that globalization creates conditions for widening international exchanges, strengthening mutual understanding between nations, expanding cultural, educational, and scientific cooperation between nations and countries, enjoying the cultural achievements of people around the world which encourages the process of modernization and the enrichment of national culture. However, these conditions also create the possible danger of diminishing the national culture with a negative impact on the privation of national identity. I feel sorry for that many unique cultures are replaced by the same thing.

Today, the vast social and cultural diversity has formed the current context for intercultural communication. To start with, I step back and look culture in possession of a new fantastic point of view. Cultural diversity is the valuable resource left over by history, and can never be regained once replaced by other cultures. Essentially, I have learned a lot from cultural diversity and my own experiment, and I advocate a multicultural way approach to globalization. Multiculturalism emphasizes the diversity of culture and seeks to utilize and encourage it.

Only not blind objected to the communication understanding we can maintain social and cultural diversity. I hold the idea that the diversity of human culture is a symbol of the development of human. It is the cultural diversity that stimulates human glorious achievement, and creates harmony in a world by connecting people to each other. The world would be a much better place to live in if we respected cultural diversity, practiced tolerance and lived together in peace with one another as good neighbors.
