The China Education Association for International Exchange Organized the First Membership Workshop at GZIC to share the Practice of SCUT’s New Model of Internationalization at Home

On April 11th, The First CEAIE Membership Workshop: The Practice of SCUT’s New Model of Internationalization at Home, organized by The China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE) and co-organized by the South China University of Technology (SCUT), was held at the Guangzhou International Campus (GZIC). Xu Xiangmin, Vice President of SCUT, Yang Jun, Vice President and Secretary-General of CEAIE, and Zhu Chaohua, First-level Inspector of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province, attended and delivered speeches. This event marked the inaugural membership workshop organized by CEAIE, with representatives from 70 member universities across China.

During the opening ceremony, Xu Xiangmin, representing SCUT, expressed gratitude to CEAIE and extended a warm welcome to all participating universities. He highlighted the new achievements made by GZIC in the critical area of talent development. He stated that promoting Internationalization at Home is a key measure to accelerate the independent cultivation of leading emerging engineering talents and to build a strong country in education. GZIC has taken the initial steps towards a new path of  build a world-class university with deep root in China. He hopes to leverage the association's platform to collaborate with partner universities, learn from each other, and jointly accelerate and expand the opening-up of education, aiming to build a major world center of professional talent and innovation.

Zhu Chaohua stated that Guangdong Province is deeply implementing the important instructions delivered by General Secretary Xi Jinping in his keynote address during his inspection in Guangdong. With the specific deployment of 1310 as a breakthrough, vigorously implementing the project of opening-up of education, and simultaneously promoting the construction of a strong province in education, scientific innovation, and talent. As a pilot case for international education reform in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, SCUT has made significant achievements in serving the major development needs of the Greater Bay Area and Guangdong Province, attracting high-end talents and quality educational resources globally, and enhancing its capabilities in international talent cultivation and scientific innovation. Zhu hopes that SCUT will seize the development opportunities, continuously deepen the connotation construction of Internationalization at Home, and build GZIC into a new benchmark for international reform in higher education in the Greater Bay Area.

Yang Jun expressed gratitude to SCUT for co-organizing the first membership workshop. He stated that the membership workshop is a beneficial exploration by CEAIE to improve the quality of member services. It aims to build a platform for peer exchange and learning by exploring, summarizing, and refining cases and experience of internationalization in education at various universities. This platform seeks to consolidate development consensus, enhance service capabilities, and promote high-quality development in international exchange and cooperation among universities. He pointed out that SCUT has achieved remarkable results in implementing Internationalization at Home. Through organizing this workshop, he hopes to further promote successful experience and encourage full exchanges, in-depth discussions, and cooperation among participating representatives to jointly explore new paths and methods for opening-up of education.

In the keynote report session, Xu Xiangmin introduced the exploration and achievements of GZIC in disciplinary layout, curriculum system, faculty team, modern college model, international academic governance system, and Two Way Approach to Internationalization. The Dean of the School of Emergent Soft Matter emphasized the successful experience of the school in promoting academic governance system reform, introducing international leading academic systems, innovatively building international academic committees, and attracting and cultivating high-level international innovative talents.

Fang Yufei, Associate Professor of the Shanghai Academy of Educational Sciences, delivered a theme report titled The Current Situation, Challenges, and Suggested Countermeasures of 'Internationalization at Home' in China. She pointed out that Internationalization at Home is an important exploration in line with the development pattern of internationalization of higher education. She suggested that universities should further learn from each other, improve relevant development strategies, establish a scientific evaluation index system, take the opportunity of digital education transformation to explore new models of international talent cultivation and promote the coordinated development of cross-border mobility.

During the sharing report session, the Directors of relevant Offices of GZIC shared topics such as the cultivation of outstanding innovative talents in engineering under Internationalization at Home, the implementation of tenure track mechanism with Chinese characteristics, the adherence to the student-centered new model of ideological and political education under Internationalization at Home, and the evaluation and sustainable development of Internationalization at Home, and interacted with the participating representatives.

Visiting the campus

After the workshop, the attending representatives visited venues such as the Shing-Ming Wu School of Intelligent Engineering, School of Future Technology, and Innovation Factory. Representatives from the Publicity Division, Office of Development Strategy and Planning, Graduate School, International Office, and the School of International Education, as well as Directors from Cffices, Colleges, and Schools of GZIC, participated in the workshops.
