A collective and quasi-continuous glide of coo6 slabs is captured in layered LiCoO2 through a combination of in situ XRD and ex-situ stem characteristics Such delithiation mechanism does not involve the nucleation-and-growth type delithiation process, represents a completely different manner from the conventionally phase-separation or solid-solution transition process. The collective glide of CoO6 slabs reflects the linkage of adjacent CoO6 slabs that endows the delithiation behavior with life to perceive the motion of Li inside the LiCoO2 structure, and quickly responds to even a minor Li loss with the structural adjustment as noted by gradual angle. After the O3 to O1 transition, the layered Li(1-x)CoO2 is then transformed to a metastable cubic phase as the layer-to-spinel transition, which mainly accounts for the structure and capacity fading upon delithiation. The lessons from LiCoO2 delithiation provide a novel, but different insight to understand the working mechanism of layered oxide materials and thus may shed new light on exploring the satisfactory electrode materials for LIBs.

About the reporter: Lu Xia is a professor and doctoral supervisor of the School of Materials, Sun Yat-sen University. In 2013, he received a doctorate in condensed matter physics from the Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences; In December 2018, he joined Sun Yat-sen University as a young and middle-aged outstanding talent of the Hundred Talents Program and carried out work around battery materials and interfaces. He deeply characterized the storage and transport mechanism of Li in materials, as well as the structural evolution, charge transfer, space charge sequence and interface/surface structure related to the deintercalation of lithium. He was selected into the Pearl River talent program of Guangdong Province in 2019, Presided over the general, youth and enterprise horizontal of NSFC, and participated in the key R & D plan of the Ministry of science and technology as the backbone of the project. He has been published more than 80 papers, which have been cited more than 5200 times, with an H-index of 32.
