Since 2009, the Forschungszentrum Jülich has awarded the Jülich Excellence Prize with a prize of €5.000 every year to internationally successful young scientists whose ideas have provided a decisive stimulus for their field of research and who belong to the top 5% of their field of peers. This distinction is based on an outstanding doctoral thesis, the main part of which was published at the Forschungszentrum Jülich, plus outstanding achievements during the subsequent two-year postdoctoral period. Based on the opinions of external experts, a senior jury of four internal and four external professors will decide on the nominee's level against international peer competition. The Jülich Excellence Prize may be awarded to up to five early career scientists. However, the award will only be awarded if the nominee's scientific achievement is beyond doubt, and will be awarded to the maximum number of researchers only if five nominees meet high standards.
