Title: Discrete Electromagnetic Metasurfaces and Sources: Theory, Design and Applications

Dr. Alex M. H. Wong (王文瀚)

Assistant Professor

Member of the State Key Laboratory of Terahertz and Millimeter Waves,

Department of Electrical Engineering

City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China

Abstract: Microwave electromagnetics (EM) holds special importance in the physics and engineering of EM waves. It has served as a fertile ground for demonstrating novel physics and developing meta-devices with disruptive applications in wireless communication and imaging. In this talk the presenter will briefly overview progresses in the field of metasurfaces and discuss his groups recent works on the discrete electromagnetic metasurfaces and sources. These structures operate in passive and active modes, and (i) demonstrate novel discoveries in physics, (ii) enable new antennas, and (iii) realize practical metalenses for microwave, mm-wave and THz waves.

Biography:Alex M. H. Wong obtained his doctoral degree in electrical engineering from the University of Toronto, in 2014. He is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the City University of Hong Kong. He is also a member of the State Key Laboratory of Terahertz and Millimeter Waves. His research interests lie in metasurfaces from optical to microwave frequencies and applied electromagnetics in general, with societal applications in telecommunication and biomedicine. Dr. Wong is a member of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation, Microwave Theory and Techniques and Photonics Societies. His received accolades include the IEEE RWP King Award, the Raj Mittra Grant, the IEEE Doctoral Research Awards from the AP and MTT Societies, and the Canada Graduate Scholarship (doctoral level).
