It was the morning of June 24 at the Haili Sports and Recreational Center, when the song Sing myself to you ignited the air of the 2018 Commencement, a moment for the graduates to express their affections for the alma mater, friendships with classmates, the gratitude to family support, and the desire for a bright future.

University leaders including Zhang Xichun, Wang Yingjun, Liu Qijin, Yu Qijun, Tao Shaojing, Qiu Xueqing, Zhu Min, Dang Zhi, Li Zheng, and Wu Yechun, as well as distinguished faculty members including Cao Yong, Li Licheng, Huang Ping, and Wei Gang, were present on the ceremony to witness the solemn hours.

During the ceremony, Zhang Xichun, Secretary of the CPC SCUT Committee, granted certificates of honor to 17 students that volunteered to do their service in the western China after graduation. Wang Yingjun, SCUT’s President, addressed a commencement speech titled “Strive for a Better Life in a New Era”.

Representatives of undergraduate students, graduate students, and alumni also gave speeches to share their stories of studying at SCUT.

All the graduates, before the end of the commencement, took their graduation oath of inheriting the spirit of the alma mater:

“We will firmly uphold our university motto of ‘Study Extensively, Reflect Carefully, Discriminate Clearly, and Practice Earnestly’. We will always stick to faith and truth, take the courage of acting and creating, carry gratitude and respect with our heart, endure hardships, and forge ahead to pioneer the era!”

The event attracted attention from several major news agencies. Live videos and pictures published by Southern Metropolis Daily gained over 100,000 clicks within two hours, while student parents and alumni that could not attend were also able to watch the commencement via online streams.
