SCUT is looking forward to seeing cooperation with the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California (USC), which is another step for SCUT’s plan of building the Guangzhou International Campus.

A delegation of USC paid a visit to SCUT on September 14 to discuss details of the cooperation. The delegation was led by Professor Andrew Paul McMahon, Chair of the Department of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine, and was received by SCUT’s President Professor Wang Yingjun and Vice President Professor Zhu Min at the Li Wu Building of Science and Technology.

Professor Wang introduced SCUT’s recent years’ achievements in talent fostering and international collaboration, as well as the progress in building the Guangzhou International Campus, which will bring adventurous and innovative mechanisms into internationalized education by working with some of the best universities around the world.

She invited USC to join the new campus program, expecting to see a deeper and closer partnership with USC in talent fostering and scientific research.

She also took the focus on introducing SCUT’s effort of building its School of Medicine, which aims to establish an international academic system that combines medical science with engineering subjects.

Professor McMahon showed his agreement on the importance of this cross-disciplinary pattern, and shared his own experiences in doing scientific research combining medical science, bioengineering, and biological materials.

Professor McMahon pointed out that SCUT has created a particular style of training students with innovative abilities, which is worth borrowing and absorbing, and can be used as a starting point for the two universities to establish an extensive partnership at high levels.

Earlier before this meeting, from July 5 to 9, a delegation of SCUT travelled to USC’s Department of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine to discuss a number of collaborating issues, including building a joint school, starting joint student training programs, and building a joint research center.

Founded in 1880 and located in Los Angeles, the University of Southern California is the oldest private research university in California. In 2016, it was ranked within the global top 50 both by the Academic Rankings of World Universities (ARWU) and US News & World Report’s Best Global University Ranking.
