The construction progress of SCUT’s Guangzhou International Campus is speeding up, after university leaders and academics held a discussion panel on Monday to conduct a feasibility study for the project.
Leaders that attended the meeting that was convened at the Shaw Building of Humanities included Secretary of the CPC SCUT Committee Zhang Xichun, President Wang Yingjun, Executive Vice-President Peng Xinyi, Deputy Secretaries of the CPC SCUT Committee Liu Qijin and Yu Qijun, and Vice Presidents Peng Shuolong, Qiu Xueqing and Dang Zhi.
Three schemes drafted by different teams were demonstrated and discussed on the table. It was at last decided to assign Professor He Jingtang and Professor Ni Yang, two highly recognized architects of SCUT who used to lead in designing the China Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo 2010, to take the lead and improve the construction plan according to advices made by the panel.
Since the agreement of setting up the new campus was signed in this March by SCUT, the Chinese Ministry of Education, the Guangdong Provincial Government, and the Guangzhou Municipal Government, the collaborative program has made solid progresses in building infrastructures, recruiting the personnel, and bringing in international partners.
Latest updates say that the land prepared for the first stage of the program is expected to be vacated by the end of July, while the plan for constructing roads in surrounding areas of the campus has been approved by the Guangzhou Municipal Commission of City Planning.
According to earlier reports, the new campus will be located close to the Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center in the Panyu District of Guangzhou. It will cover an area of 1,650 mus (110 hectares), receiving an estimated cost of over 10 billion yuan investment.
