From August 30, 2017 to September 1, 2017, the School of Computer Science and Engineering successfully held the 2017 Summer Camp for Excellent Undergraduate students. In order to attract more outstanding students, it is the first time to adopt Grant support + self-funding way. A total of 929 students from 170 colleges and universities including Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Nanjing University, Jilin University, University of Electronic Science and Technology, Northeastern University, and Sichuan University, have attended the camp. After five rounds of screening, the final 115 students were enrolled in summer camps. It became the largest summer camp in our School.

On the opening day, Professor Jun Zhang, the Dean of our School, and Professor Zhiwen Yu, Associate Dean and other teachers attended the opening ceremony. This summer camp invited teachers from each research team in the school and their research interests are intelligent computing, cyberspace security, machine learning and data mining. The teachers introduced the latest research trends and achievements in different research direction of all teams. The attendees learnt the frontier of science and technology.

Summer Camp launched the 2018-level examination-free graduate selection, mainly including interview and written examination. The selection aims to evaluate the personal qualities and professional ability of the basic knowledge by face-to-face discussion in both Chinese and English. According to the results of comprehensive assessment, there are a number of “self-funding” students with excellent performance which impressed the teachers. This camp gave a chance to teachers to seek the suitable research students. It shows the advantage of Grant support + self-funding operation.

At the closing ceremony, Professor Jun Zhang fully affirmed the success of this event and highly praised the performance of attendees. Mr. Wenzhan Fan from Nanjing University and Mr Zen-jien Chen from Huazhong University of Science and Technology said, We learnt a lot from this Summer Camp. Any questions are answered quickly which makes us feel warmth of the family of School of Computer Science and Engineering in South China University of Technology.
