June 15, the Ministry of Science and Technology issued the announcement on 2016 innovation talent promotion plan of Ministry of Science and Technology , the machine intelligent innovation team led by Professor Jun Zhang is selected as the Key Area Innovation Team of the Ministry of Science and Technology. In this year, two teams in South China University of Technology have been selected, which is ranked as the second in the country and as the first in Guangdong Province.

Machine Intelligent Innovation Team in our school is set up by Prof Zhang, who is the Yangtze scholars Distinguished Professor and National Outstanding Youth Fund winner. According to the intelligent development needs proposed by middle- and long-term scientific and technological development plan, the team carries out the research on bottleneck problems of basic theory of machine intelligence and application validation.

The proposed parameter adaptive, parallel cooperative and mixed space expansion, which overcomes the efficiency bottleneck of the algorithm and extends the versatility of the algorithm. The proposed intelligent methods have been applied to intelligent control, dynamic recognition and visual recognition, the turbofan engine stall detection, Chinese character handwriting recognition and other intelligent systems, and achieves highest detection and recognition rate in the world. Team members published more than 100 IEEE Transactions papers which have been cited more than 20000 times. The relevant results has been widely used by the European Space Agency and other international scientific research institutions and peers. The team also won the Ministry of Education Natural Science Award, and Guangdong Province Science and Technology Progress Award.

It is reported that Key Area Innovation Team of the Ministry of Science and Technology focuses on the key development and long-term needs of industry and nation. The team also has experience on major national scientific research projects, key projects and major construction projects. It has good prospects for development, organizational structure and clear innovation goals and research planning.
