South China University of Technology is one of the earliest research-intensive and educational institutions in computer science major in China. In 1958, it began to do research study in computer science. SCUT successfully developed the first analog electronic computer in southern China and developed the first Russian-Chinese translator in China. Computer Science study was started in 1960, while in 1981 the department of computer science and engineering was established. School of Computer Science and Engineering has been established in 2001.
School of Computer Science and Engineering has two Doctoral degree of primary discipline in Cybersecurity and Computer Science and Technology and Post-doctoral studies Station in Computer Science and Technology. Computer science and technology program is selected as the First Grade Key Program of Guangdong Province. We have with the Communication & Computer Network Laboratory of Guangdong Province, Engineering & Technology Research Center of Guangdong Province for Big Data Analysis and Processing, Engineering Research Center of Guangdong Higher Education for Intelligent Information Processing and Security of Big Data, Engineering & Technology Research Center of Guangdong Province for Big Data Analysis and Processing for Information Security, Computer Experiment Teaching Demonstration Center of Guangdong Province. Our school has three undergraduate programs in Computer Science and Technology (National Special Program, Guangdong Province Excellent Program, First grade Key Program of Guangdong Province), Network engineering (National Special Program), Information Security.
Our school has 111 staffs. 84 are full-time teachers including 30 professors and 41 associate professors. We have one National Natural Science Fund Outstanding Youth Foundation recipient, two National Natural Science Foundation of China Excellent Youth Fund recipient, and four Guangdong Natural Science Funds for Distinguished Young Scholar recipients.
Nine research teams with different research directions, including Multimedia technology, artificial intelligence, cyberspace security, etc. In recent years, our school obtained and involved in many significant research projects including national 973, 863, National Key Technology Research and Development Program, National Development and Reform Commission Demonstration Project and National Natural Science Foundation of China, and published a number of spearheading top-quality research papers. We joined major construction projects of CERNET demonstration project and ChinaGrid and receipted the second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award three times, and receipted First prize in Guangdong Province Educational Achievement Award in Exploration and Practice of Innovative Training Model Related to Computer.
Student development is put at the forefront of our priorities. We nurture students with innovative ability, practical ability, and humanistic quality, etc. A number of elite talents for the southern China as well as the country are graduated from our School, including Mr. Zhidong Zhang, Vice President of Tencent; Mr. Bo Zhang, Chairman and President of Guangdong AJB Digital Technology Co.,Ltd.; Zhengyu He, Chairman and CEO of Vtron Group Co., Ltd; and Di Chen, President of Youmi Tech, who was selected as the 30 Chinese entrepreneurs under 30 years old by Forbes, etc.
