Academic Visiting by Microsoft Research Asia

Aiming at enhancing the cooperation between the universities and the top enterprises in the world, bringing the students to the research work of the top enterprises quickly and also cultivating high level talents, the CS school of SCUT hosted the 5-person delegation of Microsoft Research Asia for Spring academic visiting on May 5, 2016.

On the afternoon, Dr. Rui Cai from Microsoft Research Asia made an academic presentation titled " A Brief Overview of RGB-D Object Recognition ". He gave a general description of the technology of RGB Object Recognition, which is being more and more popular in moblie terminals, such as Microsoft HoloLens, and also looked into the future of this technology. Following that, Dr. Bin Shao from Microsoft Research Asia made another academic presentation titled "Serving big graphs in real-time using distributed in-memory graph engine". Dr. Shao described the concept of Unity which is a new graphic engine beginning from the view of the encountered challenges in constructing big graphic process systems, and also introduced several Apps for constructing big graphics in real application. After the representation, the delegation of Microsoft Research Asia also demonstrated the charm of recognition service, the technologies behind the popular behaviors of evaluating face score based on photos and revealing the relationships between characters. The recognition service of Microsoft Research Asia made it possible to develop an App with millions users in a week.

It is also known that the delegation of Microsoft Research Asia also selected the Master candidates for the new joint-education innovative talents of SCUT- Microsoft Research Asia. Through the one by one interviews for the students who applied this project, they evaluated the students' abilities and knowledge in different aspects thoroughly. The selected students will have a one-year study visiting to Microsoft Research Asia from the fourth year of under graduation. Then in the stage of post graduation, the supervisors from both the SCUT and Microsoft Research Asia will tailor the cultivation program for individual students by combining the superior resources in both sides to improve the cultivation level of engineering talents.
