The project of ten thousand species microbial genome has been advocated and sponsored by the BGI-Shenzhen, South China University of Technology, Nanjing University of Technology and the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Biotechnology Research Institute, with the Shenzhen Institute of Genomics as the core.

The project is expected to complete the construction of sequence maps of ten thousand species microbial genome. The microorganism studied have covered industry, agriculture, medicine, etc, including archaebactiria, bacteria, fungi, prokaryote, algae and viruses.

The project will promote the development of fermentation, medicine, food processing, new biological energy source and environmental protection industry. And it will also promote the intensive and systematic study of the microbial genome, in order to complete the microbial branches of the “Tree of Life” program and to drive related subjects and industry to develop. Moreover, some famous institutions have also participated in the project, such as Chinese Academy of environment, Beijing University and some enterprises, and so on.

This event is a new deployment to promote the overall study of microbial genome and the discipline development of microbiology and fermentation engineering and a second cooperation of the BGI-Shenzhen and South China University of Technology.
