South China University of Technology won the first prize in BCI brain controlled robot contest of 2017 world robot conference

    Form August 23 to 27, the 2017 world robot conference, which has the largest scale, the highest specifications and the international elements in the field of robotics in China, was held in Beijing. More than 140 well-known robotics companies and research institutions all over the world participated the conference. Relying on multimodal brain computer interface wheelchair control system and Brain computer interface awareness test system, Center for brain computer interface and brain information processing of South China University of Technology won the only first prize in the BCI brain controlled robot contest after competing with more than 20 teams from Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and so on.

    Liu Yandong, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and vice premier of the State Council, attended the meeting and delivered a speech. Wan Gang, vice chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, minister of science and technology, chairman of the China Association for science and technology, and relevant local and department heads attended the opening ceremony. Vice premier Liu Yandong said that the robot is the pearl of the crown of the manufacturing industry, and is a significant technology which will lead the world in the future.

    BCI brain controlled robot is listed as one of the most important competitions, which is sponsored by the Chinese Institute of electronics and the Medical School of Tsinghua University, aimming to create a world-class brain computer interface innovation platform which combines science and technology, innovation and interaction.

    Prof. Li Yuanqing, the team leader, introduced that taking BCI brain controlled robot as the competition content reflected the important position of brain control technology in robot research, and it had a profound significance in the researches and applications in many areas such as medical rehabilitation, and military field. Dr. He Shenghong, a senior member in the team and the operator of brain controlled wheelchair, said that the victory was the result of years of accumulation.
