The School of Arts (SA) was founded in 2004, on the basis of the former Arts Department of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of SCUT. It started recruiting Music Performance undergraduates in 2002. Two years later, it began to take in graduate students of Music. In the same year, one more undergraduate program of Dancing was offered.  

The School is composed of the following departments: Music, Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, Dancing and SCUT Arts Education Center. Music and Dancing are level-2 disciplines.
The School has a qualified and competitive faculty. Dean of the school is Professor Liang Jun, Ph.D. in Art (Music). twenty-seven of the faculty staff are professors or associate professors, and most of them hold a Master or doctoral degree. At present, there are 514 undergraduate students and 65 postgraduate students in History of Western Music, Instrumental Performance, Vocal Performance .  The School has hired some outstanding Chinese and foreign scholars as guest professors and visiting professors,  including the world famous young pianist Lang Lang, the youngest visiting professor in SCUT. SA also pays great attention to the academic exchanges and cooperation with some other universities abroad like Wesleyan College. 
The School is located at the  University Town Campus in Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center. It has a state-level demonstrative center for practical teaching approved by the National Education Ministry , a training base for instrumentalists , an Art Education Center, a Youth Symphony Orchestra , a Symphonic Orchestral Band, a University Chorus and a Dancing Troup. The school also offers the open video courses such as Opening the door to the world of Symphony and the Training and Performing Arts for Symphony Orchestra, a top-level quality course of Guangdong Province.
The School of Arts has a concert hall, a hall of academic activities, different rehearsal halls for orchestral music, dance and chorus, different classrooms for music and digital piano .Teaching facilities include sets of string instruments, multi-media portfolio of playback audio and 120 pianos.
