The Studies of Dance

Educational Objectives:

To cultivate “three innovative” (innovation, creation, entrepreneurship) talents with both patriotism and global horizon, excellent “three forces” (learning ability, thinking ability, action ability) and all-round development of morality, intelligence, sports, beauty and labor. After graduation, students can work in the media organizations such as radio and television, publishing institutions, or in the organizational departments of cultural enterprises and art industries as choreographers, organizers and planners. The student mainly studies the basic knowledge of theory of dancing history and techniques, receives systematic basic music training from theoretical and practical aspects, using the relevant professional knowledge with certain aesthetic perception to analyze and interpret reasonably, while having the basic ability of dance teaching, research and choreograph.

Graduation Requirements:

1. Required Knowledge of Basic knowledge of art theory, literature, history and philosophy; Introduction knowledge concerning research methods of social sciences. Ability of aesthetic judgment over literary and artistic works.

2. Required Core knowledge concerning the system of professional dancing field; Ability of dance theoretical research, and Ability of analytical writing.

3. Required Knowledge of professional dance skills; Knowledge about practice, performance and Choreography.

4. Master comprehensive basic theoretical knowledge of music and dance; Ability of clear thinking and precise expression with language and words; Possess solid essential music and dance’s skills.

5. Possess scientific modes of thinking, abilities of analyzing and solving problems as well as abilities of actively gaining knowledge and managing information.

6. Master a foreign language, Knowledge about cross-culture and internationalization, and follows international advanced information and trends concerning development of dance discipline.

7. Be qualified to work on performance, teaching, organization, management, planning and other positions in cultural sector (incl. professional art performance organizations, cultural institutions, education system, culture propaganda departments and so on.

8. With social responsibility and correct world view; Knowledge of artistic management and social practice norms; Hold sense of competition, spirit of innovation, and ability of artistic practice.

9. Ability of discovering, analyzing and solving problems; Ability of critical thinking and independent working.

10. Required Ability of cooperating and communicating with different people; Required Ability of organization and management.

11. Aim for the highest and have a strong will—unswervingly making it a mission to inherit civilization, search for truth, revitalize the Chinese nation and benefit human beings. The development of the dance career is a heavy responsibility.

12. Possess the ability of lifelong learning and expansion of vision be assiduous, pragmatic, absorbed and diligent and keep forging ahead—coming down to earth without yearning for undeserved reputation, and working diligently to pursue excellence.

 

Discerption of Dance Major

This major is guided by the educational concept of the first-level discipline of music and dance, and the development of three majors in musicology, music performance and studies of dance. The study focused on strengthen the interaction and development of dance study, Chinese folk dance and modern dance, based on inheriting the Chinese folk dance, with practical teaching and the international perspective, by referring the advanced dancing theory in western countries. In the revaluation of Chinese dancing education in 21st century, it can prospectively adapt to social needs and form a dance discipline system with reasonable structure, solid foundation, distinctive characteristics and developments.

There are currently 8 teachers dance major not only can complete the teaching task well, but also has experienced front practice experience of acting, directing and planning. At present, dance major has formed a discipline echelon of young teachers, reasonable age and knowledge structure, high quality, solid teaching style, sharp thinking, innovative spirit and excellent development trend. Therefore, students cultivated by the major will become high-level and “two orientations-combined” dance talents, who integrate theory and practice and possess innovative spirit and practical ability. After graduation, the students will be competent with positions in professional research institutes, artistic performance organizations, cultural institutions, publishing agencies, organs of education system, cultural propaganda units and other departments, and will be ideal candidates for positions related with research, performing, teaching, organizing, choreography, management and others in arts field.

 

Program Features:

Meanwhile, the plan emphasizes combination of theory and practice. On the basis of intensifying “Two Histories & Two Introductions” (History of China’s Dance, History of Foreign Dance, Introduction to Dance and Introduction to Art), the plan values the advantageous effects of modern dance basic theory on students’ thinking development, and on the basic of inherit and carry forward Chinese Folk Dance.  combines traditional dance art and modern dance art in an exploratory pattern. On the basis, the plan highlights theoretical characteristics and practical advantages of China’s national folk dance. By setting up relevant professional courses, an international platform for academic communication is established in the Department of Dance. The plan allows students to cultivate qualities and patterns of “extensive vision, valuing practice, nationalization, solid professional ability, comprehensive theories and active thinking”.

4.“Second Classroom” Activities

“Second Classroom” Activities are comprised of two parts, Humanities Quality Education and Innovative Ability Cultivation.

1. Basic Requirements of Humanities Quality Education

Besides course credits listed in the subject teaching curriculum, a student is required to participate in extracurricular activities of Humanities Quality Education based on the student’s interest, acquiring no less than two credits.

2.Basic Requirements of Innovative Ability Cultivation

Besides course credits listed in the subject teaching curriculum, a student is required to participate in any one of the following activities: National Undergraduate Training Programs for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Guangdong Undergraduate Training Programs for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Student Research Program (SRP), One-hundred-steps Innovative Program, or any other extracurricular activities of Innovative Ability Cultivation that last a certain period of time (e.g. subject contests, academic lectures), acquiring no less than four credits.
