Winning various superior awards and prizes during high school, she then pursued professional studies at the Kagoshima Junior College.  Upon receiving her Associated Degree in music along with her teaching certification, she continued her professional studies internationally gaining additional diplomas and awards.  Miss Nikaido trained on scholarships at such prestigious institutions such as the Royal Academy of Music in London with Michie and William Bennett, L’Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris with Claudine DesJardins-Cloutour, and the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts with Margaret Crawford and Simon Channing.

Upon returning back to Asia, Miss Nikaido was an active freelancer in the Hong Kong metropolitan area (performing with such groups as the Hong Kong Philharmonic and the Hong Kong Sinfonietta), a member of the Eastern Winds (a professional woodwind quintet), and was a flute instructor in the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts Junior Program.  In December 2000 Miss Nikaido relocated to Guangzhou, China to perform with the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra where she has been since.  A founding member of the Guangzhou Woodwind Quintet, Izumi has also been an active educator here in China as well as a recitalist performing concerts in China as well as back in Japan.
