Zhang Shi

Zhang Shi Graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 2000 where he studied with well-known Chinese clarinet professor Gu Peng.  Other than performing many solo recitals as a student, he was also instrumental in forming his own chamber groups including woodwind quartets and clarinet quintets.  That same year after graduating, he joined the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra to work full-time in the clarinet section.

Since working with the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, he has had the opportunity to play in many of the world’s great concert halls and collaborate with some of the best artists.  Among the venues he has since performed in include the Musikverein in Vienna, the Theatre des Champs-Elysees in Paris, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Opera house in Sydney, Australia among others.  Artistic collaborations have been made with such artists as violinist Itzhak Perlman, cellist Mischa Maisky, the Eroica Trio, and pianist Emmanuel Ax.

Zhang Shi has been an active member of the Guangzhou Woodwind Quintet since its inception in 2003.  Aside from contributing an energetic and spontaneous spirit to the group, Zhang Shi always makes it his focus to help educate the public about classical music through the music of the woodwind quintet.
