Michael Garza

Born in 1976, Michael R. Garza has been playing the bassoon since age 14.  Following formal studies in his home state of Texas where he was the youngest member of the Austin Symphony Orchestra, further studies were pursued at Yale University and the Manhattan School of Music.  While there, intense training was done with internationally renowned bassoon soloist and chamber musician Frank Morelli—principal bassoonist of the New York City Opera and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.  Aside from Frank Morelli, Michael has also performed in masterclasses for David Mcgill (principal bassoonist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra), William Winstead (principal bassoonist of the Cincinnatti Symphony Orchestra), and French bassoonist Pascal Gallois (member Ensemble Intercontemporain of Paris, France)

Besides being an active freelance musician in Northeastern America with numerous orchestras and chamber groups, during his studies he was also a founding member of the KOSMOS woodwind quintet.  Through the KOSMOS quintet, Michael was awarded the opportunity to perform in Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall in 2000 and received first prize at America’s Coleman National Chamber Music Competition in 1999.   In 2000, the group was awarded a summer fellowship to be the woodwind quintet in residence at America’s Norfolk Chamber Music Festival.

Other than the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, Michael was one of four international bassoonists to be awarded a summer fellowship in 1999 at the Tanglewood Music Festival; the summer residence of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.  While there, he not only collaborated with members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra but worked with conductors Seiji Ozawa, Claudio Abaddo, James Conlon (principal conductor of the Paris Opera) and Andre Previn.  Aside from conductors, he also had the pleasure of collaborating at Tanglewood with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violist Yuri Bashmet and Australian horn soloist Barry Tuckwell.

Michael has been working as principal bassoonist with the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra since May of 2001.  Since then, he has taken part in numerous tours around the world with the group to Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia.  In addition to orchestral performances with world renowned conductors as well as collaborations with internationally-acclaimed artists, Michael has performed both solo and chamber concerts with the orchestra, helped to found the Guangzhou Woodwind Quintet and has performed several recitals with them.  An active chamber musician, Michael has also taken part in helping the public learn more about classical music through the woodwind quintet and maintains a private studio of bassoon students in Guangzhou.
