Introduction to Workshop:

Incremental Urbanism Intensive Studios will investigate the informal urban renewal of Jiangmen countryside. Selected sites will display locally-initiated user appropriations on existing collective forms, beginning with Part 1: Mei Clan Compound.

How can we understand the conditions of time and change, extreme hybridity that challenge current conceptual frameworks and practices? The purpose of the studio is to engage this question and begin by observing through an “incremental” lens. Students will be introduced to a new methodology of reading urban form – a nuanced reading of the existing collective built forms with attention to the space between things and the syntax of part-to-part connections. Space is read not as cohesive structure but as an unstable series of association in continual transformation, constantly reorganizing itself through processes of both expansion and retraction, an urban realm that is capable of anticipating and hosting change over time.
