On September 13, the new dean of National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries (NICAI), Prof. Diane Brand, paid an academic visit to South China University of Technology (SCUT). In the morning, she had a deep communication with the dean of our school, Prof. Jingtang He, vice dean, Prof. Weihong Guo and Prof. Yiqiang Xiao in terms of education and related research. In the afternoon, she gave an excellent lecture to our faculties and students on the title of ---- AT THE BAY: NEW ZEALAND'S COASTAL URBAN PLACES. Her lecture combined with many cases from different countries presented the relationship between water and land, make students think about the importance of water. After the inspiring lecture, she had a discussion with the audience.
Prof. Brand holds a Bachelor of Architecture, a PhD from the University of Auckland and a Master of Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard University. She was a practicing architect in the private sector before holding academic appointments at the University of Adelaide and the University of Auckland. In 2008, she moved to Victoria University of Wellington where she became Head of the School of Architecture and then Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Design. Her research interests are in the areas of urban design and urban history, particularly in cities of the New World.
