Abstract:

The physical properties of molecular materials depend not only on the constituting molecules but also on their assembling manners. With the development of computational science, it is becoming possible to predict the physical properties of individual molecules. On the other hand, predicting how molecules are assembled is still challenging. To address this issue, for the last decade, we have mainly utilized the hydrogen bonding of amide groups as a tool for controlling assembly structure and developed various materials such as supramolecular polymers and columnar liquid crystals. Furthermore, we recently reported a self-replicating reaction with amide groups that combines solid-state supramolecular polymerization and self-replicating reactions. However, using structural units with strong intermolecular interactions, such as hydrogen bondings and coordination bonds, does not always lead to desirable assembling structures as well as physical properties. In this seminar, we will introduce our strategies to control the arrangement of π-conjugated molecules without using strong intermolecular interaction units and the exploration of future materials based on our molecular arrangement strategies. Furthermore, the organic molecules that exhibit unprecedented photophysical properties will also be presented.

Brief Biography

Professor Miyajima received BS and Ph.D. from The University of Tokyo in 2008 and 2013, respectively. During his Ph.D. course, he stayed for one year at UC Santa Barbara to study polymer chemistry. After getting Ph.D., he joined RIKEN, a national research institute in Japan, as a researcher and was promoted to a unit leader (PI) in 2018. In 2023, he joined as a full professor in School of Science and Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen.

Professor Miyajima has developed novel materials with a special focus on the self-assembly of small and macro-molecules. So far, he has published many papers in top journals such as Nature, Science, Nat. Materials, Nat. Chemistry as either the first or corresponding authors. He also has been actively involved in research collaboration with companies and has multiple patents with medicine and chemical companies.

He received a series of awards e.g., President's Award from of The University of Tokyo (2012), Ikushi Prize from The Japan Society for The Promotion of Science (2012), RIKEN Industry-Academia Collaboration Award (2018), Young Scientist’s Prize by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (2018), RIKEN BAIHO Award (2018).
