Abstract:

Soft matter is usually very complex in its structure in comparison to traditional materials, which makes it difficult to characterize as well as hard to understand.  Mechanical characterization is a key tool to understand the interactions of the different constituents with each other, especially when coupled with other analytical techniques. Classical mechanical analysis is mostly suitable for hard materials, which is why rheological methods allow for significantly better insight, although many soft matter systems are not liquids. This presentation shows what kind of information can be deduced from the analysis of covalently, supramolecularly, and entanglement bonded soft matter by rheology and how those can be distinguished as well as how to repurpose an AFM to obtain mechanical data for very soft materials, even in 3D.

Brief Biography

Prof. Florian J. Stadler is currently a distinguished professor at the College of Materials Science and Engineering, Shenzhen University, Shenzhen, China. He obtained his diploma and doctorate in engineering (materials science) from Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany, in 2003 and 2007, respectively. Prof. Stadler previously worked as a Postdoc at Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium (2007-2009). From 2009 to 2014 he was a professor at Chonbuk National University, School of Semiconductor and Chemical Engineering, Republic of Korea. Since 2001, he has been involved in research on rheology, mainly focusing on structure-property relationships in various systems, ranging from polyolefins and ionomers to hydrogels and supramolecular assemblies as well as special nanoparticles for adsorption, gas sensing, and photocatalysis. He published more than 3 books and 300 papers, of which currently 15 are highly cited according to Web of Science and has accumulated more than 10000 citations on them. He is on the editorial board of Rheologica Acta and polymers.
