Prof. Mitsuhiro Shibayama, Director of the Neutron Science Laboratory of the University of Tokyo, was invited to lecture An Overview of Neutron Science and Small Angle Neutron Scattering to students of South China Advanced Institute of Soft Matter Science and Technology online from December 11th to 14th. Prof. Shibayama explained the theoretical knowledge of neutron science and shared the international cutting-edge neutron characterization technology in the lecture.

In the first lecture, Prof. Mitsuhiro Shibayama introduced the basic principles of neutron and neutron scattering, testing methods and related applications. He vividly explained why neutron scattering techniques are used from the structure, nature and characteristics of neutrons, as well as the methods of neutron generation and detection and the applications of neutron scattering techniques and ToF techniques in the field of neutron scattering. In the second lecture, Prof. Shibayama focused on the basic theory of small angle neutron scattering, scattering models and analytical methods of dilute, concentrated, bulk systems.

Prof. Shibayama is the Director of Neutron Science Laboratory, the University of Tokyo. He won the Award of the Society of Polymer Science, Japan; Paper Award, Physical Society of Japan and The Award of the Japanese Society for Neutron Science. His research interest are polymer physics of gels, block copolymers, polymer blends; experiments, theory, and instrumentation of neutron scattering; polymer dynamics with dynamic light scattering. He is the leader and has great influence in the field of Neutron Science.

After the lecture, some faculty members of South China Advanced Institute for Soft Matter Science and Technology (AISMST) and Prof. Shibayama further discussed and exchanged views in depth on the frontiers of small angle neutron scattering, creating a favorable academic atmosphere.
