Abstract
The research goal of our Laboratory of Biocolloids and Biointerfaces is to explore the fundamental nature of colloid and surface science, and to apply this knowledge to biomedical applications through an interdisciplinary and translational approach. This seminar will introduce our recent research in studying surface phenomena in interdisciplinary engineering science. I will discuss our latest invention in drop shape analysis and droplet manipulation, and multidisciplinary applications, including self-assembly monolayers, interfacial rheology, two-dimensional phase transitions, pulmonary surfactants, and nano-bio interactions for understanding the environmental, health, and safety issues of nanotechnology.
Introduction to the speaker
Prof. Zuo earned his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toronto in 2006. He is currently the Graduate Chair and Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Pediatrics in John A. Burns School of Medicine. Prof. Zuo's research interests are focused on general areas of colloid and surface science and their applications to areas of biomedical and biotechnological interest, such as applied surface thermodynamics, surface engineering, thin-film materials, pulmonary surfactants, particles, and environmental, health and safety impacts of nanotechnology. Prof. Zuo received the NSF CAREER Award in 2013 and the Faulty Research Award in 2016.
