A Review of Professor Ouyang's Lectures
2021-10-26

On October 21st, Professor Liuzhang Ouyang, Distinguished Professor of the Pearl River Scholars, gave us an informative presentation. He first provided an overview of research of multiphase and multiscale metalic functional materials of Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Advanced Energy Storage Materials, including new preparation technologies (mechanical alloying, vapor deposition, chemical synthesis), multiscale structures (nanocomposites, multiple double-scale materials, nano doped porous materials) and high-performance hydrogen storage materials (lithium ion battery materials, hydrogen storage / production materials, porous materials).

Next, Professor Liuzhang Ouyang introduced the development status, transportation and processing industry of hydrogen energy storage at home and abroad. According to the hydrogen storage methods, different transportation methods are adopted. Professor Ouyang expects that students are able to help our country approach or even surpass advanced world levels on hydrogen storage in the future.

Professor Ouyang then compared different hydrogen storage methods from a professional perspective. Among the three hydrogen storage methods, gaseous hydrogen storage has low energy density and is not very safe. Liquefied hydrogen storage has high energy consumption and requires high thermal insulation performance of storage tanks. Solid hydrogen storage is a means of storing hydrogen with high density, safety, and purity without high-pressure and insulated containers. Professor Ouyang further explained on the feasibility analysis of borohydride as a hydrogen carrier. He described the blueprint of hydrogen production and storage integration of borohydride as a hydrogen carrier. Compared with the conventional method, Professor Ouyang introduced the hydrolysis and regeneration process to realize the closed-loop integration of hydrogen production / storage without external hydrogen supply. In addition, the hydrogen supply from hydrolysis is controllable, with high hydrogen purity and safety, which is suitable for long-distance transportation. Intense research works are still being carried out to simplify the regeneration process, to reduce the regeneration cost, and to improve the regeneration yield and hydrogen hydrolysis production rate.

After the presentation, students asked many questions on the aspects of study and life, and Professor Ouyang gave answers respectively. This presentation helped students learn a lot about hydrogen production, storage and transportation, and lay a foundation for choosing a suitable research direction in the future.
