Energy And Hope —— A lecture delivered by Prof. Zhu Lei

On December 29,2017, the last Friday of 2017,in 501 classroom of BoXue Building, sophomores of Materials Innovation Class received the last seminar, which delivered by Prof. Zhu Lei, in this semester. In this lecture, Prof. Zhu mainly introduced the research findings of his team. 



One of the research findings of Prof. Zhu's team is a polymer with high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss. He firstly made a brief introduction of this polymer,which is with the characteristic of high-energy density and low loss and is expected to be used in polymer film capacitors of artificial muscle and electric vehicles. With keen interest of this novel application, all students urgently wanted to know more about the polymer.



As we know, materials' dielectric properties are reflected in dielectric constants. Materials with higher dielectric constant usually have better insulativity and stored-energy feature. Prof. Zhu then referred to the polarity of the product, shortly explaining the relation between the strength of polarization of different materials and their dielectric constants. He also mentioned that his team has compared the dielectric effects of polymers, ceramic nano particles polymers, and metal nano particles in research. Then he stressed the ceramic polymers nano particles. He said such dielectrics were not suitable for use in high electric film capacitors because of the significant energy consumption caused by interface polarization and switching fields based on multiple times of experiments, drafting and analyses. After that, he listed various materials and analyzed their physical chemistry properties and ranges of application.



Seeing the bewildered looks on students' faces, Prof Zhu said: “There are more things you need to learn as you grow more aware of the world.” Therefor, we should maintain the desire to seek for knowledge, to explore the unknown world and to change the world.
