Hope to Meet You at the School of Materials Science - A Lecture from Professor Xiao Ping
2017-12-14

On December 12th, 2017, Professor Xiao Ping, Director of Internationalization for School of Materials Science, niversity of Manchester, carried out the introduction of the University of Manchester in Room 501, Boxue Building from 2:30 pm to 3:

30pm. Professor Xia Ruidong, Deputy Dean of International School of Advanced Materials, and senior undergraduates majoring in Materials and Chemistry attended the lecture where the professional direction, curriculum, application methods, and admission criteria of School of Materials,University of Manchester were introduced.

On the lecture, Professor Xiao first introduced the city of Manchester. The cost of living in Manchester is well below London. Lots of authentic Chinese with various flavors can be found in the city. Therefore, many Chinese students have been attracted to live and study there. In addition, Manchester has two famous football teams: Manchester City and Manchester United.

Then, Professor Xiao began his introduction to the University of Manchester. On October 22nd, 2004, the University of Manchester in Victoria merged with Manchester Polytechnic University to form the largest single university campus in the UK. The new school is known as the University of Manchester. There are about 39,000 currently studying students, among whom 8,000 are international students. The University of Manchester enjoys a high reputation in the UK and around the world: it ranked fifth in the UK and 38th in the world in 2011. Many major achievements in the world come from here, such as atomic splitting and the discovery of grapheme.

Professor Xiao also focused on the University of Manchester's Materials Institute. The University of Manchester's Materials Institute is the largest material institute and the largest center for materials science in Europe. He said that the Institute boasts sufficient research funding and ample excellent laboratory equipment. The researching fields vary from nanomaterial-functional materials, bio-materials to polymers and composites material. It is worth mentioning that, Professor Xiao also put emphasis on the curriculum of materials major, from the first semester to the last.

At the same time, Professor Xiao talked about the application requirements: IELTS score of 6.5 or above and middle-grade academic performance. He shared with us how the Chinese students felt about their life and study at the University of Manchester.

Finally, in a round of applause, the lecture came to an end. Many thanks to Professor Xiao for bringing us such an exciting hour. He wished the students a bright future in scientific research and a wonderful life.
