In March 2002, the School of Mechanical Engineering (CME) was founded by merging the Department of Mechatronic Engineering, the Engineering Drawing Division and the Industrial Training Center. The College’s history can be tracked back to the establishment of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1952 when the South China University of Technology (SCUT) was founded. Over the past 50 years, especially after SCUT being selected as one of the key universities under China’s national education development plans named "Project 211 for Higher Education" and “Project 985 for World-class University”, the College has made significant progress in both research and teaching. Now, the CME is not only a well-reputed center for high level research, and has also become an important high education base in the south China region for high quality education and training in the fields of mechanical engineering and materials processing. The College is playing a more and more important role in R & D and economic growth in the region.
It is our wish that students can enjoy desired education and training, highly develop their potential. We make our best effort to ensure that they will receive high quality education and spend the most memorable university life. Along with the rapid development of the world, university life today is not only for training engineers. It is about industry relevance and about gaining experience as well as knowledge. Simply speaking, the core value in engineering education is the problem solving ability. I believe the university life here in the CME will benefit students to solve the problems they meet in their future career either in the workplace or at home. In fact our graduates have been working as engineers, scientists, managers, bankers, designers, computer experts, venture capitalist, officials or even politicians. The list is endless and the opportunities unlimited. You will find the years you spend in the CME will be amongst the most productive, challenging and interesting of your life.
Our mission is to serve the society through our academic research, engineering R&D and community service. With the effort of all the staffs and students, and collaboration with partners inland or overseas, the College has achieved numerous scientific achievements and built up a high reputation. The CME also focuses on technology transfer, R & D and collaboration with local industry. We have made significant contribution to the advancement of local economic growth through the commercialization of our research results.
We expect the CME to move forward rapidly together with the nation’s rising, and believe the College will get more robust and reach a higher level on a par with international standard through our effort and support from the society.
